ZABAVA!
za-ba-va noun- 1. Party
Saturday June 4, 2011@ 8pm: Party like a Ukrainian!
A
Zabava is a high energy party where the drinks flow as passionately as
the music and dance. Traditional social dances such as the butterfly,
polka & schottische will definitely be played... but this is not
just for Baba!
Around 10:30pm you will witness (or maybe even
dance in) the Canadian-Ukrainian tradition of the “Kolomeyka”. Kolo
(means circle) and you will know it is time as the dance floor clears
and the Kolomeyka music begins... slowly, at first. The participants
will ready themselves on the sides and those who know what they are
about to see pick their favourite Kolomeyka vantage point. It is a dance
off like no other. The music encourages the dance and as the tempo
increases boys leap, girls twirl, acrobatics and tricks are performed as
each dancer shows their true spirit and love of dance. The music keeps
going as long as the dancers keep showing and if it stops before the
dancers are ready; listen for the chant to start the band playing again.
A
Zabava is a party like no other and will put the icing on an already
awesome day of Ukrainian Cultural experiences... be advised tickets do
sell fast.

Saskatchewan’s proud multicultural heritage is celebrated
year-round, and spring is the time of year when one particular type of
celebration happens all across the province.
Ukrainian
festivals and concerts are festive, high-energy events that feature
nimble dancers, colourful costumes, great traditional music, and of
course, fantastic Ukrainian food. Groups and individual dancers compete
for trophies in dance festivals, or demonstrate particular dances in
showcases. Festivals also often include arts and crafts sales, bands,
choirs and more.
Some of Saskatchewan’s notable Ukrainian dance festivals include:
- The Prince Albert Barveenok Ukrainian Dance Festival:
The 21st annual festival features 500 dancers, ages 4 and up, from
throughout Saskatchewan and Alberta. Prince Albert, March 27-30.
